After several hours of play in the beta of Star
Trek Online, we have summarized for our first game impressions. Probably we start next week
with an extensive diary reporting. So here is a little preview of graphics, level design and
character editor.
Star Trek Online: Beta-First impression:
The last days in the closed beta phase of Star Trek Online have shown us: developer Cryptic is
not only working hard on his upcoming MMO, but also addresses the needs and concerns of the
beta community. Thus, in the final stages before the start of open beta some important updates
and improvements recorded: Objects can be compared by Tooltip now, the interface has been
significantly revised and the bridges of their ships are finally accessible. The missions you
have some new gebalanced, revised and completed - even if to do of course still
work.
We were surprised at the high graphic
quality of the game: whether the asteroid belt in space or cozy villages to lush forest planets
- sharp textures, good effects and a generally high level of detail features of the highly
instanced game world. The question is whether you can keep this high level of graphic quality
and variety through the entire game - Cryptic has already announced plans to leave some areas
of the game by a random draw, the pre-level components are back together again. Whether this is
sufficient in the longer term, to provide good content? We are curious.
Brilliant is the character editor: With a
few clicks, we were able to cobble together a very individual character that could easily
appear in the next Star Trek movie. Even the orchestral soundtrack sounds moody and, sto
credits, together with stylish graphics for a dense atmosphere. However, dampen the missions a
little good first impression - Quests are simple only in text windows, and told all season, ran
far out into massive gun battles, whether on the ground or in space. Surprising small scripts
and story-like bodies in The Lord of the Rings Online, we have so far not even
spot.
