Games Benefit Children
Do the benefits outweigh the downside
People often differ on the benefits of children playing video games, some people claim that children are exposed to
too much violence within the games. They feel these games have no real benefit to children that play them. However,
more and more parents and educators are seeing the up side to video games, whether they are on consoles or on the
computer.
Improved Hand-Eye Coordination
Studies show that children who play video games have a marked improvement in their hand-eye coordination. Many
games require specific button sequences and in game actions that call for swift coordination skills. Sony Online
Entertainment LLC conducted a survey hosted on the Yahoo-owned website Shine, a site geared toward parents. Of the
parents that responded to the survey, 75 percent of them reported that their children had improved hand-eye
coordination attributed to video game usage.
Help with Physical and Mental Disorders
Recent Studies report in some circumstances video games have been able to aid children with physical or mental
problems. NASA reports children with ADHD may actually benefit from video game usage. Since the games force the
player to focus in order to succeed some habits or pain levels may be reduced.
Nottingham Trent University gambling studies professor Mark Griffiths notes that video games help build social
skills and can be used as a method of distraction for children enduring painful treatments. A case sited as a
success for the positive use of video games is one in which a boy had an illness that caused him to pick at his
lip. The boy was given a handheld video game system as a treatment, and two weeks later, his lip had healed.
Boosts Social, Team and Cognitive Skills
In a recent Shine Survey by Sony it was noted that children gained social skills via computer and video game use
noting that 72 percent of parents say their children play video games online with friends often.
Online gaming can help build team concepts by making them work together as a unit thus increasing their
communication skills as well. This gives children another outlet thay can use to connect with friends in a social
manner.
In some cases, children receive an esteem boost because of their game playing abilities. Abstract ideas are taught
involving many different levels of thought which can improve grades and make children feel better about themselves.
Problem-solving and cognitive skills are often improved thanks to video games, since most games require them to
solve puzzles and find paths around obstacles. This instills a sequence of logical thinking they can carry with
them into the real world and classroom.
